Hartford Alumni Chapter History

In 1919, Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. began to develop what are known as Alumni Chapters. These individual chapters (designated by geographical location) are comprised of college graduate members who have established residence in close proximity to each corresponding chapter.

In 1950, the Hartford Alumni Chapter was founded by Boce Barlow, Robert Moody, James Trailer, Warren Howard, Kenneth Hickman, Thomas Borders, William Pickens, Daniel Fletcher, Walter Mitchell, and Walter Burden—embracing Kappa men within the Greater Hartford Area.

The City of Hartford has named two of its city streets in honor of two Hartford Alumni Chapter founders. The "Boce Barlow way" is named after Boce Barlow, who was initiated at Howard University and became the first African-American Judge on the Superior Court in the State of Connecticut.

The "Rev. Robert Moody overpass" was named in honor of the Baptist Minister Robert Moody, who was initiated into the fraternity at Wilberforce University. He was extremely active in the Hartford community and was instrumental in ensuring that African-Americans were hired in the public school system in the City of Hartford.

As a chapter within the Northeastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Hartford Alumni boasts a long history of achievers and accomplishments. Our membership contains a diverse assemblage of business owners, businessmen, attorneys, medical practitioners, educators, scholars, policemen, firemen, state & local government workers, musicians, and others who live life in accordance with the Fraternity's fundamental purpose of "Achievement."
